TARGET 1 Mine
Since 2005, Welkom Winder Services has supplied and supported Mine Refuge Bay Emergency Light and Signalling Units for TARGET 1 Mine. The system is designed to clearly identify the location of an underground mine refuge bay chamber and to remain operational during the loss of normal electrical power. During normal mains operation, the unit provides synchronised flashing green illumination. In the event of a mains power failure, the four high-brightness LED lamps automatically change to flashing red while an audible alarm is activated. An integrated battery backup system provides more than 12 hours of standby capability, ensuring that the refuge-bay location remains highly visible during power interruptions or emergency situations. The system demonstrates Welkom Winder Services' long-term capability in underground mine safety, emergency signalling and rugged electrical equipment engineered for harsh mining environments. Mine refuge bays provide designated temporary safe areas for underground personnel during hazardous incidents. Clearly identifying the position of a refuge-bay chamber is therefore an important part of underground mine safety infrastructure, particularly during power failures, smoke, dust or reduced-visibility conditions. Under normal mains supply, the unit flashes green. If mains power is lost, the system automatically changes to flashing red illumination and simultaneously activates an audible alarm while continuing to operate from its internal battery backup. This combination of visual and audible indication provides miners with a clear emergency reference point when normal underground conditions are disrupted.
Underground mine refuge bays require highly visible identification during both normal operating conditions and emergency power loss, particularly during smoke, dust or reduced-visibility conditions
Supplied Mine Refuge Bay Emergency Light and Signalling Units providing synchronised green flashing during normal operation, automatic changeover to red flashing with audible alarm during power failure, and over 12 hours battery backup
Continuous refuge-bay identification during normal and emergency conditions, with automatic changeover and extended battery backup ensuring underground personnel safety
Beginning in 2005 and continuing to the present, Welkom Winder Services' involvement with refuge-bay signalling systems demonstrates long-term experience in underground emergency safety equipment and mining electrical infrastructure. This continued involvement reflects the importance of reliable, maintainable safety equipment in environments where emergency systems must remain operational when normal mine infrastructure is compromised.
A Mine Refuge Bay Emergency Light and Signalling Unit is a self-contained safety device designed to clearly indicate the location of underground mine refuge bays during both normal and emergency operating conditions. The unit incorporates four high-brightness red and green LED lights operating in a synchronised flashing sequence. Synchronised illumination improves the visibility of the refuge-bay indication within underground passages, where light reflection from surrounding walls assists miners in locating the refuge area. During normal mains supply the system flashes green. When mains power is lost, all four LEDs automatically change to flashing red while an audible alarm operates simultaneously. The alarm can be silenced using a push button mounted on the lower side of the enclosure while visual emergency indication remains available. An integrated long-life lithium phosphate battery maintains emergency operation for more than 12 hours following loss of mains power.

Provides visual identification during both normal and emergency conditions.
The system automatically changes its visual indication when mains power is lost.
Flashing red LEDs and an audible alarm provide multiple forms of emergency indication.
More than 12 hours of standby capability supports extended power interruptions.
Four synchronised LED lights improve visibility within underground passages.
IP65 enclosure protection supports operation in demanding mining environments.
Loss of underground electrical power must not result in the loss of refuge-bay identification. The system therefore incorporates a long-life lithium phosphate battery that maintains emergency operation for more than 12 hours following loss of mains power. This allows the visual and emergency signalling system to remain operational during extended power interruptions.
Refuge-bay signalling equipment must operate reliably in demanding underground conditions. The unit is available in robust enclosure configurations including powder-coated mild steel, stainless steel and 3CR12, with an IP65 protection rating to provide protection against dust and water ingress.
While operating from the normal mains supply, the refuge-bay unit provides synchronised flashing green illumination to clearly indicate the location of the refuge chamber.
When mains power is lost, the system automatically detects the failure, activates internal battery backup and initiates emergency mode operation.
All four LED lamps automatically change from green to flashing red while the audible alarm operates simultaneously, providing dual visual and audible emergency indication.
Mains Available
While operating from the normal mains supply, the refuge-bay unit provides synchronised flashing green illumination to clearly indicate the location of the refuge chamber.
Mains Failure
When mains power is lost, the system automatically detects the failure, activates internal battery backup and initiates emergency mode operation.
Emergency
All four LED lamps automatically change from green to flashing red while the audible alarm operates simultaneously, providing dual visual and audible emergency indication.
Does not produce flammable gas in the manner associated with certain lead-acid gel battery systems.
Synchronised operation improves visibility as emitted light reflects from underground surfaces and mine walls.
