Freddies 9 Shaft
Since 2009, Welkom Winder Services has provided 900kW pump starter panel solutions and ongoing technical support for Freddies 9 Shaft. These heavy-duty starter panels are associated with the control and protection of large pump motors used within demanding mining applications. At a power level of 900kW, motor starting and protection require carefully engineered electrical systems capable of handling substantial operating and starting currents while protecting the motor, starter equipment and upstream electrical infrastructure. The ongoing project demonstrates Welkom Winder Services’ experience in high-power motor control, pump starter engineering and specialised mining electrical systems.
A 900kW motor represents a substantial electrical load. Starting a motor of this size can create significant current demand and electrical stress if the starter system is not correctly engineered. The starter panel must therefore provide dependable switching, appropriate protection and a control architecture capable of supporting reliable pump operation. The engineering challenge lies in balancing motor-starting performance, system protection, electrical-network limitations and long-term operational reliability.

A 900kW pump starter panel is a heavy-duty motor-control system designed to start, stop, control and protect a large electric pump motor. At this power level, starter systems are typically engineered around medium-voltage electrical infrastructure, depending on the mine’s supply network and motor specification. The panel provides the electrical interface between the mine supply and the pump motor while incorporating the switching, control and protection required for dependable operation. The exact starter technology depends on the electrical system, motor characteristics and operational requirements.

Very large pump motors are commonly supplied from medium-voltage networks because operating them at lower voltage would result in very high current levels. Medium-voltage operation can significantly reduce current for a given power level, making conductor sizing, switching and system losses more manageable. Typical industrial voltage classes for large motor applications can include 3.3kV, 6.6kV and 11kV, depending on the site infrastructure.
High-power pump starter systems can use various starting methods depending on the electrical supply, motor characteristics and operational requirements. Direct-on-line vacuum starters provide full-voltage starting where the network and motor can tolerate the starting current. Medium-voltage soft starters use controlled solid-state switching to progressively increase voltage during startup. Variable frequency drives provide controlled motor speed and can optimise pump operation where variable-speed control is required.
Vacuum contactors are widely used in medium-voltage motor-control applications because the switching contacts operate inside a sealed vacuum interrupter. The vacuum environment allows electrical arcs to be extinguished rapidly when the contacts open and protects the switching surfaces from external contamination. This makes vacuum technology well suited to demanding industrial motor-control applications where reliable repetitive switching is required.
High-power starter panels can incorporate instrumentation and control interfaces that provide operators with information about electrical conditions and operating status. Depending on the installation, this can include current and voltage indication, local control selectors and interfaces to higher-level automation systems.
Protects the motor against sustained excessive current that could cause overheating and winding damage.
Provides rapid protection against severe electrical faults within the motor or supply circuit.
Detects abnormal three-phase supply conditions that could damage the pump motor.
Monitors electrical supply voltage to identify conditions outside acceptable operating limits.
Detects abnormal current flow to earth, protecting personnel and equipment.
Can stop pumping equipment if the pump loses the required fluid condition, preventing mechanical damage.
